Mentoring and Coaching

There are a number of different ways in which students learn knowledge and practical skills, and these approaches always need to be adapted to the specific students, trainers, and educational objectives being considered. Some of the many ways in which learning experiences can vary include:

  • Does the learning involve practical “on the job” learning or learning in simulated environments?

  • Is there a highly structured lesson plan or is the discussion more flexible to adapt to the needs and interests of the students?

  • Does the learning focus on specific information related to specific situations, or is the focus more on bigger picture information that can be applied to a range of different situations?

  • Is the learning in a group environment, or one-to-one between the student and the trainer?

  • Does the learning focus on objective content or does it also involve the discussion of personal feelings (such as the anxiety a student might experience in different workplace settings)?

  • What does it mean for the learning experience to be classified as successful?  Does a student need to demonstrate that they reached a certain level of knowledge and practical skills according to set of requirements specified at the start of the learning program?  Was the learning experience more flexible according to the student’s needs and interests, and hence there is a less specific measure of whether the experience was successful?
